Introduction
Transport is vital for the free movement of people and goods. A great challenge is the mitigation of the negative impacts of transport while ensuring the positive aspects of mobility. The use of sustainable and innovative means of transport plays an important role in achieving the EU's energy and climate objectives and the air quality in the urban environment specifically.
Efficient Transport Use
A key aspect of efficient transport use is a high load factor. Road transport is known to have a vacancy rate of 30-40%, thus there is great scope for improvement providing immediate relief from congestion, noise, and most importantly, reducing the emissions generated for each tonne transported.
Urban Vehicle Utilization
In addition to the use of trucks, thousands of vehicles are on the roads of the EU every day in urban areas, not solely for the transport of goods but also for other purposes. If the use of these vehicles can be complemented by a parcel delivery service in their main use, then the freight carried will not be transported by an additional conventional freight vehicle.
Project Objective
The main objective of the LIFE GreenYourFreight project is to develop an innovative logistic platform for last mile green delivery of goods in competitive terms for SMEs and individuals, therefore reducing the emissions generated.
Socioeconomic Benefits
The socioeconomic benefit is the implementation of an additional pick-up and delivery with certain profit by increasing the productivity and usability of drivers and vehicles respectively.
Platform Overview
The LIGE GYF platform links User Type 1 (i.e. UT1), which can be any carrier (i.e. truck, taxi, bus, private vehicles), with User Type 2 (i.e. UT2), which can be any shipper (i.e. retailer selling groceries, an individual).
Concept Explanation
The main concept is that UT1 is already en-route or has a prescheduled trip, hence the carbon footprint for the delivery of UT2 freight is near zero. Moreover, it is cheaper and faster because it happens ad-hoc, and the financial incentive for UT1 to handle the additional order can be lower than usual.
