EnhanCed veHicular biomethANe proDuction at small-mEdium scale using Lignocellulosic agrI-food wastE in Rural areas
LIFE CHANDELIER aims to enhance cost-effective biomethane production from agri-food wastes using blockchain and innovative technologies, reducing GHG emissions by up to 80% for sustainable transport.
Projectdetails
Introduction
Biomethane can make a significant contribution to climate mitigation in the European Union (EU). The European Commission (EC) estimates a biomethane production by 2030 of 350 TWh, thus saving about 110 M tonnes CO2eq emissions, around 6% of the total effort to achieve the required 55% GHG reduction.
Project Objectives
LIFE CHANDELIER aims to demonstrate an enhanced, traceable (via blockchain technology) and cost-effective biogas and vehicular grade biomethane production (according to standards ISCC EU 202-5 and 205) in small-medium scale plants. This will be achieved through:
- Simultaneous extrusion-based pretreatment of complex lignocellulosic agri-food wastes (in particular, olive pomace, almond hull, vine shoots, and cereal straw).
- Anaerobic co-digestion with other organic agri-food wastes (pig slurry and slaughterhouse waste).
Optimization of Agri-Food Wastes
Different combinations of agri-food wastes generated in rural areas will be optimized in the frame of the project, focused on maximizing the biogas yield.
Innovative Biogas Upgrading System
The solution will be complemented with a novel biogas upgrading system, based on hydrophobic membranes. This system is a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative compared to traditional methods such as water scrubbing or chemical absorption.
Environmental Impact
The cost-competitive, feedstock-flexible biomethane production solution proposed, based on modular and versatile innovative technologies, will lead to a significant reduction of GHG emissions (up to 80%). It will enable cost-effective biomethane production in rural areas for sustainable transport.
Validation of Biomethane Quality
In this sense, the biomethane quality will be validated as Bio-CNG in a High Duty Vehicle (HDV) that will cover 120,000 km within the project duration.
Digital Modelling
LIFE CHANDELIER will also include the digital modelling of the different processes integrated into the proposed solution, with the aim of optimizing the biomethane production and facilitating the upscaling and replicability in other ecosystems, regions, or feedstock types.
