Renforcer la connectivité des milieux ouverts et des populations d'espèces prioritaires qui s'y associent dans la région transfrontalière de l'Ardenne orientale belge et de l'Eislek luxembourgeois
The LIFE ArdennEislek project aims to enhance cross-border conservation of priority habitats and species in the Ardennes and Eislek by restoring ecosystems and improving connectivity.
Projectdetails
Introduction
The eastern part of the Ardennes, spanning across Belgium and Luxembourg, is a particularly interesting territory as it represents one of the last strongholds of nature in two densely populated and urbanized countries. Here, semi-natural habitats are a shared heritage that is rapidly deteriorating due to factors such as intensive agriculture and forestry, urbanization, and invasive species.
Need for Cross-Border Action
To address this urgent problem, cross-border action is needed to restore existing sites, increase their size, and create new entities to reduce their isolation. In response to these challenges, three nature protection associations from both countries have decided to collaborate on a new project named LIFE ArdennEislek.
Project Aim
The project's overall aim is to improve the conservation status of priority Habitats of Community Interest (HCI) and Species of Community Interest (SCI) typical of the Belgian Ardennes and the Luxembourgish Eislek by strengthening their cross-border connectivity.
Specific Objectives
To achieve this ambitious goal, several specific objectives have been set:
- Restore/recreate 312 ha of HCI (4010; 4030; 6230*; 6410; 6510; 6520; 91D0*; 91E0*) and 138 ha of butterfly SCI grasslands (Lycaena helle and Euphydryas aurinia).
- Acquire, following a habitat reconnection logic, 110 ha of new protected areas with a strong and long-term protection status.
- Plant 20 km of hedges and 300 isolated trees to optimize open habitats for 2 bird species (Lanius excubitor* and Lanius collurio).
- Reintroduce at least 1 metapopulation of a species on the brink of extinction in Wallonia (Euphydryas aurinia).
- Ensure the long-term implementation of appropriate recurrent management of the restored sites.
- Raise public awareness about the project's goals.
- Strengthen cross-border cooperation among project partners to enhance the management of the cross-border network of protected areas.
- Share acquired expertise and knowledge with the scientific community and other stakeholders involved in nature conservation.
