Innovative cost-effective water reuse approach in compliance with the new European regulation framework for agricultural irrigation (WAter Reuse adaptation RegulatIOn agRo)
LIFE WARRIOR aims to demonstrate a cost-effective water reclamation system for agricultural irrigation in compliance with EU regulations, enhancing water availability and promoting a digital marketplace for membrane reuse.
Projectdetails
Introduction
LIFE WARRIOR (Innovative cost-effective water reuse approach in compliance with the new European regulation framework for agricultural irrigation - WAter Reuse adaptation RegulatIOn agRo) will demonstrate an innovative and cost-effective water reclamation train to guarantee safe reclaimed water for crops irrigation, in line with the European regulation on minimum requirements for water reuse (EU 2020/741).
WARRIOR Reclamation Train
The WARRIOR Reclamation Train is based on the application of reused Ultrafiltration (Re-UF) membranes and a low energy consumption and chemicals-free (UV lamps with light emitting diodes (LED)) disinfection process.
Digital Tools
The system will be coupled with a WARRIOR Digital Tool for risk management and process optimization, aiding to estimate and enlarge membranes lifespan. Furthermore, a Re-UF Market Place Service will be developed as a digital platform to provide an instrument to connect used-membrane providers (water utilities or administrations operating DWTP) with end-users.
Demonstration Location
This treatment train will be demonstrated in Murcia, one of the most water-stressed regions of Spain and Europe. Their commitment to the conservation of freshwater resources has allowed recycling in agricultural uses over 80% of treated municipal wastewater volume after its filtration and/or disinfection with chlorine, in line with the Spanish Royal Decree 1620/2007 for water reuse.
Regulatory Compliance
However, the inclusion of more restrictive quality requirements described in the EU 2020/741 claims for the implementation of robust water reclamation schemes and risk assessment methodologies.
Expected Impact
Thus, LIFE WARRIOR's impact is expected to be wide for:
- Society and the environment (water availability)
- Economy and technology (cost-effective treatment train demonstration and development of a market place service for Re-UF)
Consortium Experience
The consortium members have high experience in EU project coordination and participation and have already worked together in research and innovation projects.
