Implementation of a value chain for the exclusive recycling of waste bio-lubricants and their regeneration through the production of new bio-lubricants
LIFE BIO-LUBRICANT aims to establish a European value chain for the separate collection and regeneration of bio-lubricants, enhancing sustainability and reducing reliance on virgin materials.
Projectdetails
Introduction
The use of bio-lubricants as a replacement for mineral-based lubricants is constantly growing in the European market, both for reasons of sustainability and for lower environmental impact / CO2 emissions reduction.
Current Challenges
There is currently in the European Union no separate collection of bio-lubricants (UVEOs) from those of mineral origin. This results in:
- A potential loss of efficiency of the current lubricants regeneration processes due to the presence of the currently non-regenerable bio-lubricant fraction in the lube-waste.
- A lack of possibility to obtain new bio-lubricating products with a regenerated base.
- The consequent use of greater quantities of virgin raw materials for their production.
Project Overview
To respond to this clear issue, the project LIFE BIO-LUBRICANT gathers partners and stakeholders of a new European value chain. The project aims for the realization and demonstration, on a semi-industrial scale, of:
- A short and efficient separate collection of exhausted bio-lubricants, currently collected without distinction from those of mineral origin.
- Subsequent regeneration of these bio-lubricants.
Supply Chain Development
The project will build a new supply chain focused on the collection of used bio-lubricants in various industrial sectors, including:
- Hydraulic oils in steel mills
- Fluids for metal quenching
- Dielectric fluids
- Neat and emulsifiable soluble oils for metal treatment
An innovative technology developed by PARODI will then be demonstrated in a real-life environment for:
- The removal of impurities and waste (water, metal residues, etc.)
- Hydrolytic cleavage of the bio-lubricating part
- Separation of any traces of mineral contamination
The aim is to finally reintroduce the used bio-lubricant in the value chain by transforming the obtained fatty acids into new base oils. Moreover, process byproducts will form the base for advanced biofuels according to RED 2 Annex IX.
Conclusion
LIFE BIO-LUBRICANT will increase the culture of separate collection and use of regenerated products in different manufacturing sectors.
