Optimization and investment planning of District Heating systems for lower temperatures and decarbonization
The GREEN HEAT LIFE project aims to decarbonize seven EU district heating networks using Digital Twin technology, targeting a reduction of 61,000t CO2 emissions and promoting renewable energy investments.
Projectdetails
Introduction
The GREEN HEAT LIFE project addresses the challenge of transitioning the EU's heating sector to a low-carbon future, targeting seven district heating networks in five countries. Leveraging Gradyent's innovative Digital Twin technology in preparing targeted and fit-for-purpose investment plans, the project aims to modernize these networks with investment plans to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
Objectives
This will reduce GHG emissions, increase the use of renewable energy sources, and optimize energy efficiency. The key aims for the investments are to:
- Reduce 61,000 t/year of CO2 emissions.
- Achieve approximately 290 GWh primary energy savings.
- Trigger the generation of new renewable energy by over 200 GWh.
Anticipated Outcomes
The anticipated outcomes include:
- Validated Digital Twins for each heating network.
- Optimization measures for daily operation.
- Comprehensive data availability assessments.
- Detailed investment plans for decarbonization.
Project Ambition
The project's ambition is to set a new standard for energy utilities, promoting sustainability and achieving a significant reduction in GHG emissions. By creating impactful educational initiatives, webinars, and policy analyses, the project aims to influence systemic change at both EU and national levels.
Replication Efforts
Replication efforts, including workshops and webinars, will extend lessons learned to other district heating operators. The consortium, comprising diverse partners managing seven networks responsible for more than 2,000 GWh of heat supply, ensures a robust and impactful approach to district heating optimization and decarbonization.
Investment and Future Expectations
With an expected investment of approximately €185 million in sustainable energy, the GREEN HEAT LIFE project envisions a transformative impact on energy efficiency and emissions reduction in the European heating landscape. After the project, we are also expecting at least 15 new district heating companies to boost their decarbonization and fuel switch with the same approach, anticipating over €100 million in additional investments through replication.
