Projectdetails

Introduction

The project aims to produce biocarbon at an industrial scale from wood waste and low-value biomass, using a combination of pyrolysis and agglomeration technologies. The resulting biocarbon will be used as an alternative to fossil reductants in the metallurgical industry to produce critical raw materials such as silicon and manganese.

Environmental Impact

Over its first ten years of operation, the project is expected to avoid 415 kt of CO2 emissions, enabling a 100% GHG reduction compared to traditional coal alternatives.

Unique Approach

MetZero stands out through its uniquely circular approach to biomass valorisation. It uses waste wood as feedstock to produce biogenic biocarbon of high carbon density and reactivity tailored for high-temperature metallurgical applications.

Advanced Technologies

Employing advanced pyrolysis and agglomeration technologies, MetZero’s proprietary process achieves a 16% higher carbon content than metallurgical coal while maintaining the mechanical strength and reactivity required for metallurgical applications.

Contribution to Renewable Materials

The project addresses GHG emissions by recycling wood waste destined for incineration, significantly contributing to Europe’s renewable materials sector. MetZero will produce 10 kt of biocarbon annually, generating 36 GWh of carbon-neutral energy to power local industries and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Alignment with Sustainability Goals

The project aligns with European sustainability goals by supporting the circular economy, waste valorisation, and green technology supply chains. It contributes to the continent’s self-sufficiency in critical materials, primarily silicon and manganese, vital for batteries, solar panels, and wind turbines.

Local Production Benefits

Producing biocarbon locally supports Europe’s green infrastructure and minimises dependence on imported raw materials.

Regional Partnerships

MetZero will partner with and strengthen regional suppliers and industry clusters, particularly in waste management and energy, creating new jobs and reducing dependence on imported fossil resources.

Scalability and Replication

Its scalable and modular design allows the project’s model to be replicated for sustainable biocarbon production across Europe. By leveraging local wood waste feedstock and adaptable production modules, MetZero can expand to other regions, supporting decentralised, green economic growth across Europe.
