Skipavika Green Ammonia
The SkiGA project aims to install a 120 MWe electrolyser in Norway to produce 180,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and 1 million tonnes of ammonia, supporting the EU's climate neutrality goals by 2050.
Projectdetails
Introduction
The use of renewable hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels will play an important role in the EU’s transition towards climate neutrality by 2050, and the achievement of the objectives set forth in the REPowerEU plan.
Project Overview
The SkiGA project plans to install a 120 MWe alkaline electrolyser in the Skipavika Harbour, Norway, to produce an estimated amount of 180,000 tonnes of hydrogen and around 1 million metric tonnes of ammonia over a 10-year production period.
Production Process
To produce the final product of renewable ammonia, the SkiGA plant will combine within the same installation two sub-systems:
- Pressurized alkaline water electrolysis
- Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis
Off-taker and Distribution
The main off-taker of the ammonia produced under the SkiGA project is EnBW, a German energy producer and supplier, for a duration of 15 years. The ammonia produced will be transported by LPG vessels to a designated port on the Continent for further distribution.
Value Chain Development
EnBW Group is developing all segments of the ammonia and hydrogen midstream value chains, including:
- Shipping
- Terminals
- Inland transportation
- Storage
The energy markets targeted by EnBW are mainly hard-to-abate industries, shipping, and transport sectors.
Project Development
The project will be developed by the Norwegian company SKIGA AS, created by Fuella in partnership with Skipavika Næringspark and EnBW.
Contribution to European Goals
This project contributes to the European Hydrogen Bank’s goal of making 10 million tonnes of domestically produced renewable hydrogen in Europe available by 2030.
